EU ETS (Emissions Trading System) effective 01/01/2024

Dear clients,

As integral part of EU ́s 2030 climate target of a 55% emission reduction (“Fit for 55”), EU commission has ratified the EU Emissions Trading System – EU ETS – to be implemented for the shipping industry effective 1st January 2024. This involves a three-year phase-in period, with the cap increasing from 40% of emissions in 2024 to 70% in 2025 and 100% in 2026, and for each year afterward.

In terms of geographical scope, the ETS for shipping includes 100% of emissions on voyages and during port calls within the EU/EEA (European Economic Area), and 50% of emissions on voyages into or out of the EU/EEA.

ETS Surcharges – Grimaldi Deep Sea

To adhere with the EU ETS, Grimaldi EuroMED will have to purchase emission permits, or ‘EU allowances’ (EUAs) in the market corresponding to its emissions. Currently 1 EUA for 1 tonne of Co2 costs between €85-90 / USD 90-95 and 1 tonne of fuel produces approximately 3 tonnes of CO2, effectively adding USD 270-285 to each tonne of fuel. Please note that the EU ETS covers CO2 (carbon dioxide) and will also include CH4 (methane) and N2O (nitrous oxide) emissions from 2026.

As a consequence, Grimaldi EuroMED decided to implement an EU ETS surcharge to comply with this new regulation. As from 1st January 2024, the following surcharge will be introduced on all voyages bound to / from Europe:
